The days are getting shorter, the weather a little colder. And that means the most wonderful time of the year is almost here. Yes, the festive decorations that adorn the inside and outside of your home are a big part of the magic. But beyond the twinkling lights and the holiday themed home design, there are ways you can decorate your home to make it a little cozier for the upcoming cold weather season.
Outdoor Ice Lanterns
If you’re tired of coming home to a front porch that feels cold and overly dark, use the cold to your advantage to add a little extra light with some outdoor ice lanterns. All you need is a little water, a plastic container, and some cold air.
Hot Cocoa Bar
Is there anything better than coming in from the cold to a nice cup of hot cocoa? The answer is no. And with a temporary hot cocoa bar just inside your front door, you can welcome friends and family into your home this winter a little more warmly. Have a few mugs at the ready, along with some tabletop decorations, and maybe a few marshmallows. Coming in from the cold never felt (or tasted) this good.
The Hearth of Your Home
When it’s cold outside, focus your attention on your indoor fireplace. Even if you don’t use your fireplace all that often to build actual fires, your hearth can be a cozy gathering spot during the winter. Rearrange your furniture to focus on your fireplace, add plush fabrics and warm upholstery, and cozy up with a good book for a long winter’s nap.
To create a warm, textured look and feel to your home, simply add layers. Layer rugs, throws, and pillows to your living and visiting rooms. And there’s nothing cozier than a layered look in your bedroom (with a few plush throws and pillows) for the times when you just need to wrap up in something warm and shut out the rest of winter for a while.
When it’s too cold to go outside, cozy up with a good book in your very own reading nook. Find a warm corner of your home, or a tucked away window where you can see the outdoors without feeling them too. Then add a few warm blankets, pillows, and a stack of good books and you’re set until spring.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. And decorating for cold weather can be a magical experience in and of itself. Take inspiration from the home design ideas above or think of a few of your own to make this cold weather season a little extra special.
